We try to estimate the distance Imre covers by calculating the distance on the road that follows the river, then adding 10-20% depending on how winding the river seems to be. Of course this method is a highly unofficial way to do this, so if you know about a better calculation method, please let us know. We don’t have a map detailed enough to use a piece of yarn.
Imre started out at 8 am today, and stopped halfway through Lake Laberge at 2 pm. Hours later he was still there. We were not worried too much because right then he sent an “OK message” with his Spot. We expected that he would continue after a short break but it seemed that was all for that day.
Looking at the local weather report, there was no storm or extreme weather that would require wasting a precious half day. Later Andras said that even light wind can create waves on this lake that are strong enough to significantly slow down the kayak. He figured that his father is waiting for the night for the river to become nice and smooth. He was right. Shortly before midnight Imre started paddling… But that belongs to tomorrow’s blog entry.
